Our children in three prestigious clubs of India

A Glimpse into NVFA's Football Odyssey!

When we started working with the children of tribal communities, we wanted to excel in education, and we wanted to do contextual education. So, when we started to work in football, many couldn’t relate to the concept. Many told us not to work in sports in an area where malnutrition is rife. As we end 2022, we have three of our children in three prestigious clubs of India.

“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life; dream of it; think of it; live on that idea. Let the brain, the body, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success”.

While the girls were the show stoppers this tournament our boys also made their presence felt in the competition. The boys U-17 team became the runners-up but our star player Pramod Wate won the Man of the Tournament. The U-14 Boys’ Team got the 3rd position however; their games were a major crowd-puller.

A conversation with Antara: Gokulam Kerala FC

It has been three months since Antara moved to Kerala. Starting a new academy can be a thrilling and intimidating experience. On the one hand, it’s an opportunity to meet new people, learn new things, and expand your horizons. On the other hand, it can be overwhelming to adjust to a new environment and routine, especially if you’re joining a more advanced academy than you’re used to. Antara is on a unique journey, and we wanted to understand her personal experience.

Pramod taking things far East: ATK Mohun Bagan FC

Pramod Wate this time wrote a script no one could have imagined. He has been selected for one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in India, ATK Mohun Bagan FC Youth Academy.

In a rigorous trial that lasted almost three months at Salt Lake City ground in Kolkata among nearly 4000 players, he qualified in the top 30 making it in the U-17 at the ATK Mohun Bagan FC Youth Academy.

Pramod has been an inspiration for our children here in Mrida. Be it football, studies, or cultural activities he has been at the forefront of all and with flying colors.

We won an award! Grassroots Sports Women's Achievement of the Year 2022- RNS U17 Girls' Team/MP Team at Subroto Cup

This award is for the girls. It will motivate us to work harder. With the right kind of support on nutrition and building the girls’ strength, we hope they will win at the national level and inspire a whole generation of girls in this region.– Priya Nadkarni

Academics

Teaching English has been our bugbear for several years now, mainly because teachers are not available. While we have tried multiple things and interventions through technology, we always felt the need for two-way live classes.

Our collaboration with Lotus Petal Foundation’s Vidya Sahyog program has begun in December and will help us deal with this issue.  As part of this, English language classes for Grades 3-8 will be conducted by the experienced and trained teachers of the Vidya Sahyog Program.

A baseline test was conducted and existing learning levels of all children were determined. The program has been introduced based on the baseline results.

Agriculture

Agriculture has been the primary occupation of the Gonds of this region – in the villages here, they are simply referred to as “Kisan”. Most of our children come from such a background. In modern schooling even in rural areas, agriculture is excluded from the curriculum, a problem because this is such an integral part of people’s lives here and children should always be in touch with their cultural capital. For the same purpose we have allocated 1.2 acres for farming in our school campus.
Children use this land not just to grow crops but also to experiment with different crops in terms of inputs and processes. From sowing to harvesting, the children lead. They decide which crops they want to grow based on the quality of soil and how. The produce is used in the hostel mess, giving a sense of contribution to them as well.
Our children are rarely ignorant about anything related to agriculture – in fact, they know more about it than books can teach. They are in touch with their roots this way and enjoy themselves in the fields growing food together. Till date they have grown paddy, wheat, long beans, ginger, taro root, ladies finger, coriander, spinach, onions and tomatoes, etc.

Funding

Change is gradual but if you keep doing certain things and follow the processes every day, you eventually start to see results. What are these results, you may ask? Our senior children who play football are also great and caring coaches to the younger children. They are able to draw up training plans and implement them, something that one does not find even among licensed coaches in India today. All of them know how to conceptualize large events, prepare budgets and make them a reality. We organize the Raja Hriday Shah Golden Baby League every year, an event that is entirely run by children and sees participation of teams from 30+ villages. Inspired by this year’s success at the Subroto Cup as well as club selections, more girls and boys are participating in the baby league. Children who participated in the first year have evolved well as they have continued to practice – something that they don’t do otherwise. All our children are Computer-literate with our senior students learning to code in Python and HTML. We have already shared with you how 4 teams comprising some of these students won the Code to Enhance Learning hackathon last year. This year, a new set of children is participating, and the previous winners have taken on the role of mentors to this batch. All children from our residential program are healthy, vaccinated, dewormed and show no signs of anemia. Before joining us, they were anemic, weak and underweight. There are regular health check-ups that have unearthed and dealt with health issues such as hearing and vision problems, persistent stomach aches, etc. Thanks to all the support from our Partners, donors and institutions, we are able to continue our work every year. In FY 2022-23, we have been supported by the Union Bank Social Welfare Trust, Feeding India by Zomato, Healthplix Technologies and Mylo. Other than these, the mainstay of our funding effort is individuals, and we are very fortunate that many of them have been supporting our work for multiple years. We ran a campaign around Daan Utsav in Diwali on the Give India platform. We raised INR 23,78,769/- Our annual budget for FY 2022-23 is Rs. 1.32 crore that is helping us work with 460 total children across Mandla, Dindori and Anuppur districts of eastern MP with a staff of 36 people. Priorities going forward: We have started our fundraising efforts for FY 2023-24 so that we are in a comfortable position to execute our plans for next year. Our key priorities are:
  • Starting and finishing Phase 1 of construction of our campus on the 4 acre land acquired in Mandla district HQ. The campus has been planned with a total capacity of 300 residential students. Phase 1 comprises 2 separate dormitories for girls and boys, a dining area and the football ground.
  • An intake of up to 50 new children, taking the total strength of our residential program to 160 students in FY 2023.
  • Shifting the boys from Class 10 and above to Mandla to access better schooling and ground facilities
  • Training both girls and boys to compete in elite level competitions
  • Preparing coding aspirants for technology opportunities in higher education
  • Beginning training to crack armed force entrance exams for Class 11 students
  • Using the Golden Baby League to build awareness and action against gutkha and tobacco consumption among minors – this is a very deep-rooted problem that has an entire generation of children addicted during their most productive years.
  • Happy New Year!

As we enter the new year, we wanted to take a moment to thank you for your support and to wish you a happy and healthy new year. Your generosity has made a real difference in our organization, and we are deeply grateful for your kindness. We hope that the new year brings you joy, prosperity, and all the things you wish for. Thank you again for your kindness and for believing in our mission.
