Being the eldest child, Kushlesh had to support his family since his father was an alcoholic. With a deep fear of the outside world, he strongly resisted school in the initial days. Playing football in Mrida's academy slowly got him interested in attending school. Things started to turn around due to the football practices, he started mingling with the rest of the teammates and performing well in football. Now he’s happy soaking in knowledge and expertise to become a good football player.

Abandoned by both of her parents, Brijkumari’s frail and poor grandparents had to take care of her till she was discovered by Mrida’s team in her village. Initially she was least interested in doing any school activities including studies. Slowly after starting to play football and with counselling, she started to unwind, to look at things from a positive lens. Now with an encouraging environment in school and nutrition and care at Mrida's hostel she finds school activities enjoyable to follow.

Devendra was a bright student studying at the village school and played football too. Since both his parents worked at the farm, he helped with the domestic chores and took the cows for grazing. He had no opportunities to excel at the village school and hence moved to RNS. Now, he is doing well in academics and is learning programming at RNS. His parents are his role models, and he aspires to become an engineer to support the family income and reduce their financial difficulties.

Ritu’s parents separated, and she went onto live with her grandmother. After her Nani passed away, her aunt helped her. She was finally glad to settle in at the Mrida’s village hostel and meet other hostelers with similar life stories. She was weak in studies but had picked up clay pot making from her Nani who used to make clay pots for a living. Now, Ritu is learning to read and write with supportive teachers and is taking football training at RNS. She aspires to be a teacher.

Pramod belongs to a typical tribal family that is dependent on subsistence farming in the village. His parents occasionally work as daily wage labourers to support family income. He used to study at the village school, 3 km away from his home and would walk to and fro on school days. Now, at Mrida’s residential academy, he’s shaping up to become a good mid and forward position football player. He plays at the district level and has contributed towards winning matches twice since 2018.

Your donations help us build skills and employability learning and training programs. From Middle Grade onwards students at RNS are put onto the vocational and skills-building track to develop their employability skills. Based on their abilities and interest in any of the three areas – academics, sports, or agriculture, the school teachers help students gain access to blended learnings and resources to develop their knowledge and proficiency.

Tenacious students

Riverside Natural School was established by Mrida Education and Welfare Society in 2016 to ensure education reaches poor tribal families in remote rural areas in district Mandla, Madhya Pradesh. So far, our outreach has engaged 533 children from tribal families in areas of education, sports coaching, robotics, and programming. Post-lock-down our grassroots interventions have moved towards a blended learning approach to involve teaching partners and volunteers from all around the country. The teachers, staff, and mentors play a decisive role in shaping these children’s future. Most of the staff and teachers at Mrida’s school belong to the local communities and are familiar with the culture, upbringing, and difficulties faced by the children we reach. They take a keen interest in these children’s holistic growth to ensure their wellbeing and care takes a center stage along with academics and other learnings.
